It's not a secret that the main people in the world have their small guilty pleasures, the most common of which is gambling.

In his new book, Michael Stahl - a journalist that has worked at the Australian Consolidated Press headquarters in Sydney, reveals some stories about the man, who was influential in helping to form the Australian media culture.

Kerry Packer was an Australian media tycoon. His family company owned a controlling interest in the Nine television network and leading Australian publishing company – Australian Consolidated Press (later PBL). Outside of the country, he was best known for founding World Series Cricket.

“Kerry Packer — Tall tales & true stories" is a book that explores Parker's cheeky humor and high-stakes nature through a collection of stories by the people who knew him.

In the extracts from the book, the reader will find some interesting details about his life and personality.

He was a man of big thrills, so he gambled a lot. “Investing a six — or seven — figure sum in a game of baccarat or on the spin of a roulette wheel would seem anathema to Kerry Packer’s personality.”

Packer once said: “Betting is like a disease, which is not understood by those who do not have it.”

The Bulletin editor-in-chief, Garry Linnell, told Stahl: "He inhabited that town when Sydney wasn’t all sparkling like it is today," Linnell says.

"Sydney was a tough town; it was run largely by gangsters, through all these backstreet meetings and dens of iniquity.

Kerry moved within it, and then he moved above it. Kerry’s greatest passion was gambling. He lost and won big money."

But he didn't only lose the money when gambling. He was also a crazy-generous tipper.

There is a well-known story about a lucky cocktail waitress at the MGM Grand.

"He liked the service the girl was providing. He asked her if she had a mortgage. She said yes, and he said, “Bring it in tomorrow, and I’ll pay it off for you.” It was for US$150,000.’

There is a similar story bout Packer paying a mortgage for a waitress that he accidentally bumped and caused to drop the drinks tray, and a croupier, who got $80 000 worth of chips from Packer.
