European Roulette Odds

European roulette is a game that does not offer the player good odds but makes up for it by being a game that although looks complicated is very easy to learn and offers the player a wide selection of bets, each with its own assigned payout, odds of winning and house edge.

In order for the player to understand how to calculate the different odds that European roulette offers it is important to understand the basic principle of betting odds which are calculated by comparing the chance of winning versus the chances of losing.

European roulette uses 37 different numbered slots that are located all around the roulette wheel. These slots include the number 1 through 36 and the number 0 (zero). Assume for a second that a player is making a split bet on two numbers, the odds will be calculated as 37-to-2.

However it is important to understand that casinos do not offer players a payout that is based on the true odds of the bet. The casinos always offer a lower payout than the true odds and this is what gives them an advantage over the player. This type of advantage the casino has over the player is called house edge.

All the European roulette bets are divided into two categories of bets; inside bets and outside bets. The inside bets are risky bets that have a low chance of winning. In order to compensate for the low odds of winning the inside bets offer very high payouts.

The outside bets offer exactly the opposite in terms of payouts and odds of winning. The payouts are much lower than those offered on inside bets, but the lower payout is compensated by much a higher chance of winning.

European Roulette Inside Bets Odds

Bet Other names Payout Winning Odds %
Straight up Bet Single number 35 to 1 1/37 = 2.70%
Split Bet 2 numbers 17 to 1 2/37 = 5.40%
Street Bet 3 numbers, Line 11 to 1 3/37 = 8.10%
Corner Bet 4 numbers, Square 8 to 1 4/37 = 10.81%
Line Bet 6 numbers, Double square, 6 line 5 to 1 6/37 = 16.21%

European Roulette Outside Bets Odds

Bet Other names Payout Winning Odds %
Column Bet 1st column / 2nd column / 3rd column 2 to 1 12/37 = 32.43%
Dozen Bet 1-12 / 13-24 / 25-36 2 to 1 12/37 = 32.43%
Colour Bet Red/ Black 1 to 1 18/37 = 48.64%
Even/Odd Bet 1 to 1 18/37 = 48.64%
Low/High Bet 1-18 / 19-36 1 to 1 18/37 = 48.64%

Players are advised to always prefer outside bets as they will provide for a longer playing session because the player will win a lot of bets with low payouts that will ensure their bankroll lasts longer than if the player would risk all their money on inside bets.

In addition it is important to remember that European roulette is far more favorable to the player than American roulette so when players are faced with a casino that offers both types of roulette, players should always choose to play European roulette.
