How to Play European Roulette

European roulette is one of the oldest casino games still played today in every casino around the world. The game’s history is somewhat disputed by many game historians believing that the French should be credited with the invention of the roulette game since it was invented by Blaise Pascal, a renowned mathematician who invented it by mistake while trying to invent a perpetual motion device.

Other historians believe that the game of roulette is in fact a hybrid of several popular games that were played in various European countries around the 18th century. Games like the Italian Biribi and Hoca games, or the English Roly Poly and E.O. board games.

Game Objective

When playing roulette the objective is to correctly predict on which numbered slot the roulette ball will land on. Accurate predictions are awarded a payout according to the bet made.

Before You Start

When you travel to a casino resort and wish to play roulette, you will notice that the roulette chips in use around the roulette table are different than the other casino chips in use in other casino games. This is because roulette uses dedicated roulette chips that have no currency denomination on them.

Any player interested in playing roulette must first exchange their cash or regular casino chips for a single color roulette chips. Each player gets different colored chips so that the croupier can easily distinguish which player made which bets. The value of the chips is determined by taking the total value of the buy-in and dividing it by the number of chips given.

When you are done playing you can ask the croupier to cash-out and they will exchange your roulette chips back for regular casino chips.

Betting Limits

Each roulette table has minimum and maximum bets that are allowed at the table. You are not able to make a single bet that is lower or higher than the table limits. In some casinos there is also a limitation on the total maximum of bets a player is allowed to make in one round of roulette. This means you will not be able to make several separate bets at the same time if their total exceeds the table limit.

How to Play

Locate the type of bet you wish to make on the roulette table that has on it markings for every type of available bet. Remember that different roulette bets offer different odds so be sure to understand the bet you are about to make.

Place your chip or chips on the area of the bet you wish to make. The croupier will spin the wheel and then just before the croupier will drop the roulette ball on the spinning wheel they will announce “no more bets”. From this point on you are not allowed to change or remove your bet. Before the call you are able to do anything you wish with your chips.

Once the ball has landed on some numbered slot, the croupier will announce the winning number and place a special marker on the area of the table where the winning number is listed. Then the croupier will collect all losing bets and pay the winners.

While the croupier is busy paying winning players, you are allowed to start placing your bets for the next round of roulette.

Types of European Roulette Bets

Roulette bets are split into two types of groups; inside bets and outside bets. The roulette inside bets offer high payouts but have a lower probability of winning, while outside bets offer lower payouts but have a higher probability of winning.
