Introduction to American Roulette

Roulette School

Roulette is a French word that means “small wheel” and although the game is called American Roulette, it is deeply rooted in European history. It is one of the oldest casino games still played today in casinos all over the world.

It is a game of chance that uses a roulette wheel with the numbers zero, double zero and 1 through 36. It offers a variety of betting options, from high risk and high rewards to low risk and low reward, to suit every type of gambler.

American Roulette History

The gambling capital of the US during the 18th was New Orleans in the state of Louisiana. French immigrants that were fleeing the dangers of the French Revolution brought with them many popular European gambling games such as Blackjack, Craps, Baccarat and French roulette.

At first the American roulette had zero, double zero, picture of the American eagle and the numbers 1 through 28. In cases where the roulette ball landed on zero, double zero or the American eagle the house would win all the bets except for bets made on the specific winning symbol.

The casino had an edge of 12.9% on single number bets because the payout offered was 27 for 1 instead of 27 to 1. In addition players could wager on red/black and columns bets that each had a group of seven numbers.

This type of roulette was obviously favored by the casinos as it offered them a big advantage over players. However players did not take too kindly to this game and eventually American roulette copied the game’s layout and rules, with a couple of important exceptions:

American roulette did not offer the “En Prison” rule that provides the player a greater edge.

American roulette kept the zero and double zero slot which offers the casino a greater edge than European roulette that is played using only a single zero.

Basic American Roulette Rules

When you first approach a roulette table you must exchange your cash or regular casino chips for specially colored roulette chips with the croupier at the table you are about to play at. You may only use these chips to make wagers and when you are done playing you can cash them for regular casino chips at the croupier or the cashier cage.

Once you got your chips, place your bets on the roulette table. Roulette bets are split into two main groups:

Inside bets – these are high risk bets that offer high payouts. The bets are made on single numbers including zero and double zero or adjacent numbers in small groups of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 numbers.

Outside bets – these are low risk bets that offer you a better chance of a win but in return offer lower payouts. These bets are made on large groups of numbers (12 numbers) or on red/black and even/odd.

While you make your bets the croupier will give the roulette wheel a spin and just before the roulette ball is dropped onto the spinning roulette wheel, the croupier will announce “no more bets”. From this point on you are not allowed to add, change or remove your bets.

Once the roulette ball lands on a numbered slot, the croupier places the dolly (a marker) on the winning number and clears all losing bets from the table. The croupier will then pay winning players and while payment is being made, new bets are allowed to be placed on the roulette table.

Online American Roulette

The internet revolution made all our lives easier. We all have access to many services online that were previously not available. In the past when you wanted to play casino games you had to travel to a land casino, if you lived in a country where they existed, or travel internationally to a casino resort.

Nowadays anyone can access casino games, including American roulette, from the comfort of their home with great ease. All you need is an internet connected computer and you can start playing online American roulette.

Live Dealer American Roulette

In recent years a new technological advancement that allows to stream live video images in real-time has brought with it the birth of the Live Dealer Casino that offer a real casino gaming experience to online casino players.

These games are not software-based but rather use a casino-styled studio with real roulette tables and real professional dealers. The game is streamed live to your computer screen and you are able to see your bets being placed on the roulette table, the dealer spinning the wheel and dropping the ball.

Live Dealer American roulette combines the best that both worlds have to offer; both an American roulette game you can play from home and all the security and fun you get when you are able to monitor every step of the game.
