Playing Roulette at Land-based Casinos

Roulette School

Anyone who played roulette in land-based casinos (sometimes called Brick and Mortar Casinos) and in online casinos will be able to attest that while the general concept of the game and betting structures are identical online and offline, there are some major difference that players need to be aware of before playing roulette at land-based casinos.

Land-based vs. Online Roulette

When you play roulette at an online casino you usually play on your own against the casino software that is governed by a Random Numbers Generator (RNG) technology. There is not real use of real roulette table, wheel and ball. The software just randomly selects numbers.

The only way to play at a real roulette table with a real roulette wheel and ball, and have a real person acting as the dealer is in land-based casinos or playing live-dealer roulette games at online casinos, which are a new trend that tries to mimic real play in an online environment. Sadly the numbers of online casinos that offer live-dealer games is still very limited.

Buying Roulette Chips in Land-based Casinos

When playing roulette at land-based casinos you need to change your cash into roulette chips which are not the same as the chips used for other games such as blackjack or poker. Each roulette table has its own float and different colored chips.

Each player gets a stack of chips that is different in color from the chips other players receive. This is done so that bets of different players do not get mixed up. You will need to exchange your money or casino cash chips (that are used for all other games) at the roulette table you intend to play.

All you need to do is approach the roulette table and lay some cash or cash chips on it. The croupier (the roulette dealer) will then take your cash or cash chips and hand you a stack of single-colored chips. At the end of play the croupier will exchange them back for casino cash chips that you will be able to exchange for cash at the casino cage (where the cashiers sit).

Making Roulette Bets in Land-based Casinos

You can place your bets on the roulette table once it has been cleared of any bets made in the previous round. The croupier would wait for players to place their bets and then spin the wheel.

Seconds before the croupier is about to drop the ball onto the spinning wheel they will announce “no more bets” and from that moment on you cannot add, remove or change any of your bets. Players that insist on making or changing a wager after the ball was dropped need to announce their bet verbally and the croupier has the right to accept or decline the bet.

You will be allowed to make bets for the next round of roulette only after the ball landed on the winning number and the croupier placed the dolly (marker) on the winning number on the roulette table and cleared all losing bets.

Roulette Etiquettes in Land-based Casinos

When you play roulette at an online casino you can do this from the comfort of your own home while wearing your pajamas. You can eat, drink, and speak on the phone or anything else that you wish to do while playing.

However in land-based casinos there are rules of etiquettes that all players must adhere to while playing. For example you are not allowed to prevent other players from copying your bets and you cannot disturb or argue with the croupier.

Overall the roulette playing experience in a land-based casino is a fun experience occurring in opulent and classy environment and provides players with a fun evening out. If you have never visited a land casino we strongly recommend that you put it on your ‘to do’ list.
