Types of Roulette Call Bets

Roulette School

Betting in roulette is done by placing chips on the roulette table layout. The layout is divided into different areas where different bets can be placed. This is the most common way to play roulette and the way it is played most of the time.

However there is another type of betting in roulette that does not require the player to place their chips on a specific bet box, but rather make an announcement of the bet aloud. These bets are named Call Bets and they are made for several reasons:

The croupier announced “no more bets” but you wish to add a bet even though once the “no more bets” announcement has been made you are not allowed to touch any of the bets on the table. Making a call bet is the only way you are able to add a bet at that late stage of the round.

You are unable to approach the table or the area of the table you wish to place your bets on. This could be due to overcrowding around the roulette table or simply due to laziness of not wanting to keep going around the table or outstretching yourself trying to reach the right betting area.

You are interested in making what is referred to as The French Bets which are not marked on the table layout.

Call Bets vs. Announced Bets

Before we go into what are French bets we need to state the distinction between call bets and announced bets.

Call bets are bets that are called out loud by the player and they commit the player to make the bet they called.

Announced bets are bets that are announced out loud but the player has to place money or chips on the table to cover their announced bet prior to the round of play being completed.

The French Bets

When playing French roulette there is a series of announced bets that the player needs to announce aloud to the croupier. The croupier acknowledges the announced bet by repeating it and placing chips on the table to represent the bet.

Jeu Zéro

A bet that is made on seven numbers that include the number zero and the six numbers closest to it on the wheel: 12/35/3/26/0/32/15.

The bet is always a total of four chips (or multiples of four): 1 chip on 0/3 Split, 1 chip on 12/15 Split, 1 chip on the number 26, and 1 chip on 32/35 Split.

Viosins du Zéro

A bet that is made on the seventeen numbers that are placed on the roulette wheel between the numbers 22 and 25 inclusive: 22/18/29/7/28/12/35/3/26/0/32/15/19/4/21/2/25.

The bet is always a total of nine chips (or multiples of nine): 2 chips on 0/2/3 Street, 1 chip on 4/7 Split, 1 chip on 12/15 Split, 1 chip on 18/21 Split, 1 chip on 19/22 Split, 2 chips on 25/26/28/29 Corner, and 1 chip on 32/35 Split.

Le Tiers du Cylindre

A bet that is made on the 12 numbers that are placed opposite the zero on the roulette wheel. The numbers are: 5/8/10/11/13/16/23/24/26/27/30/33.

The bet is always a total of six chips (or multiples of six): 1 chip on 5/8 Split, 1 chip on 10/11 Split, 1 chip on 13/16 Split, 1 chip on 23/24 Split, 1 chip on 27/30 Split, and 1 chip on 33/26 Split.

A bet that is made on all the “orphan” numbers that were not included in the three French bets mentioned above. The numbers are: 1/6/9/14/17/20/31/34.

The bet is always a total of five chips (or multiples of five): 1 chip on 6/9 Split, 1 chip on 14/17 Split, 1 chip on straight-up 1, 1 chip on 17/20 Split, and 1 chip on 31/34 Split.

Other Call Bets

In addition there are a few other announced bets that are available to players:

A bet on a number that is backed by additional numbers to either side of it. For example a bet on “0 and neighbors” is a five piece bet that is actually a single bet on 3/26/0/32/15.

These bets can be used in combination, for example a “1, 9, 14 and the neighbors” is in reality a bet of 15 chips that covers: 1 chip on each 18/22/33/16, 2 chips on each 9/31/20/1, and 3 chips on the number 14.

Final bets (in French they are called Finaal) cover all the numbers that end with the same digit. So a bet on “Finaal 4” is a bet of 1 chip placed on each of the following numbers: 4/14/24/34 and “Finaal 0” will cover the numbers: 0/10/20/30.

When making a Finaal bet remember that all bets on Finaal 0 to Finaal 6 will cost you four chips (or multiples of four) and Finaal 7, 8 and 9 will cost you three chips (or multiples or three).

In some casinos there is the ability to make Split-finaal bets, for example a “Finaal 4/9” would be a 4 chips total bet, with 1 chip on 4/9 Split, 1 chip on 14/19 Split, 1 chip on 24/29 Split and 1 chip on the number 34.

Complete Bet

A bet on all the different inside bets, made on a specific number. Complete bets are sometimes called Maximum bets or Full bets. If you wish to make a complete bet on the number 20 you will need to announce “20 to the maximum”.

If you make a complete bet on 20 you will be making the following bets as part or one large bet:

Bet Type Numbers # of Chips
Straight-up 20 1
Split 17/20 2
Split 19/20 2
Split 20/21 2
Split 20/23 2
Street 19/20/21 3
Corner 16/17/19/20 4
Corner 17/18/20/21 4
Corner 19/20/22/23 4
Corner 20/21/23/24 4
Six Line 16/17/18/19/20/21 6
Six Line 19/20/21/22/23/24 6
Total chips wagered: 40

The maximum bet will depend on the table limits in the casino you are playing roulette at. The “20 to the maximum” can cost you $4000 at one roulette table and $40,000 at a table with a greater limit.
